Judging Criteria

Judges will make their assessment based on the following elements:

1. Manglacharan

  • Presentation, clarity, and adherence to Gurbani and Raag requirements.

2. Sur (Pitch Accuracy)

  • Ability to stay in tune consistently throughout the performance.

3. Taans

  • Clarity, speed, and control of taans while maintaining the mood of the Shabad.

4. Alaap

  • Depth, clarity, and execution of alaaps in accordance with the Raag.

5. Melody & Composition

  • Musical arrangement that supports the Shabad and Raag while staying within traditional frameworks.

6. Emotional Depth & Bhavna

  • The spiritual and emotional connection conveyed through the performance.

7. Collaboration with Tabla (Laya)

  • Synchronization with tabla player; consistency in taal and rhythm.

8. Collaboration of Entire Jatha

  • Overall coordination, balance, and unity among all members.

9. Gurbani Shudhata (Accuracy)

  • Proper pronunciation and correct recitation of Gurbani without any errors or added words.
